Chocolate Toffee Caramel Bars

This was a Pillsbury Bake-Off winning Recipe in 1996.
I made these on Sunday & they were really good.

1 yellow cake mix
1/3 c. oil
2 eggs
2 c. chocolate chips
1 c. white chocolate chips (I left these out, not a white chocolate fan)
3 chocolate covered tofee candy bars cut into little pieces (or I used 1 bag of heath baking pieces)
1/2 c. butter
32 caramels, unwrapped
1 can sweetened condensed milk

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease 13x9 inch pan. In large bowl, mix cake mix, oil & eggs & mix well. Stir in chocolate chips & candy bar pieces. PRess half of the mixture into the pan. Bake for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile in med. saucepan, combine butter, caramels, and sweetened condensed milk. Cook over medium heat until smooth & melted, stirring occasionally. Pour over cooked crust. Top with remaining dough and bake additional 25 minutes, or until top is set and edges are golden. Cool & cut into bars.

Dear Karyn,

I'm so glad you liked these bars. Thanks for including the recipe here. I came up with the recipe for the Bake-Off after eating something similar at a Nordstrom's bakery. After making them over and over for the Bake-Off, I haven't made them in years. Glad to know the recipe is still alive! (And very sweet, yes?)

Regards,
Amy Limbrick (Amy Kline in the 37th Bake-Off cookbook)
