Candy Cane Cookies

With the Christmas season here, I made these fun little treats for our preschool the other day. The kids loved them & they really were good.

1 c. sugar
1 c. butter
1/2 c. milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp peppermint extract
1 egg
3 c. flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 tsp red food coloring
2 Tbsp finely crushed peppermint candies
2 Tbsp sugar

Mix wet ingredients. Add dry ingredients. Divide dough in half. Mix red food coloring into half of the dough. Cover & refrigerate for several hours until firm.
Mix crushed peppermint & sugar and set aside.

Heat oven to 375 degrees. Shape 1 tsp of dough from each half into a 4" rope. Twist together & shape into candy canes. Bake 9-12 minutes. Top with candy mixture immediately. You might want to press it in slightly to help it stick.
